  • Queens of Rock is a welcoming space where women and gender non-conforming climbers come together to learn all the ins and outs of climbing in the gym, as well as basic knowledge to take their skills outdoors. In this course, we will start with the very basics of gym climbing, learn how to set goals, and progress into competent and well-rounded climbers, surrounded by other people who support and encourage us to be our best. Along with roped climbing at our Downtown Crag location, we will learn the art of bouldering and spend a few sessions at our Main Street Bouldering location.

    No experience is necessary for Queens of Rock 1. Rental gear is included in the cost of the course.

  • This course is for any women and gender non-conforming climbers interested in pursuing lead climbing and learning the skills to become a competent lead climber and belayer in the gym and outdoors. Topics covered in this class will include lead climbing, lead belaying, basic anchors, outdoor sport climbing skills, basic traditional climbing skills, training for climbing fitness and more. This class will emphasize personal growth as a climber in a supportive and empowering environment.

    Prerequisite: Participants should feel comfortable top rope belaying and climbing least 5.9 consistently without falling.

  • Want to get into climbing and don’t know where to start? With our Intro to Climbing class jump start your climbing by learning all the basic climbing movement skills. Also, learn how to fit your climbing shoes and harness, tie your knot and belay. No experience necessary.

    Bonus! Class comes with one free week of climbing with rentals so that you can practice your skills!

  • Ready for the sharp end? Take our Lead Climbing class and we will show you all the skills you need for lead belaying and lead climbing. This class will prepare you for lead certification at the gym.

    Prerequisites: Able to top-rope 5.8 comfortably and certified to top-rope belay at Flagstaff Climbing.

  • Take your climbing skills outside! This 3-hour indoor Gym to Crag class will teach you how to transfer your climbing skills to local outdoor sport climbing areas. The class includes instruction on anchors, leading outdoors, risk management, and basic crag etiquette. The instructor will also provide information about beginner-friendly local areas.

    Prerequisites: Intro to Climbing Class or basic climbing skills. Indoor lead climbing experience is encouraged but not required.

  • Taught by Warrior’s Way trainer Lor Sabourin, this clinic addresses fear of falling and improving commitment. Participants will do falling, movement, and resting exercises and apply all learned skills to a challenging route. This will be done in small increments creating appropriate progressions for each individual student. Each student will leave with a structured method for taking appropriate risks with diminished fear.

    Students learn:

    • To fall safely

    • To give a cushioned belay

    • To distinguish between no- and yes-fall zones

    • How to engage no- and yes-fall zones

    • To break a climb into smaller risk events

    • Better risk assessment

    • How to rest effectively

    • To improve breathing

    • To trust the body

    • To create flow and momentum

    • To commit more deliberately

    • To reduce fear

    Prerequisites:

    • Minimum 6 months climbing experience

    • Climb a minimum of 5.9 in the gym without falling or hanging

    • Some exercises are on toprope; some are on lead. Being able to lead climb is not required, however. If students want to lead during the clinic they must get lead certified at the gym PRIOR to the clinic date.

  • CJ is a physiologist, earning her Master of Science degree in Exercise Physiology and a Master of Science in Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She has taught several courses in Physiology at the university level and worked as a Master Fitness Trainer Instructor with the U.S. Army. CJ has over a decade of experience as a strength coach, working with a variety of people. She has trained active-duty soldiers, high school and college athletes, climbers, cardiovascular rehab patients, and many more. She is a climber herself and is well-versed in the needs of climbers for creating balance in strength. CJ is expertly trained in biomechanics, and her coaching emphasizes proper and efficient form for strength training exercises. CJ knows how to identify common mistakes, with a good eye for correction, and has a wealth of knowledge in biomechanics that she continues to learn and expand upon.

    CJ currently works in a muscle physiology and biomechanics lab at NAU, where she is finishing her PhD in Biological Sciences, while also teaching courses in anatomy and physiology. Besides having two Master of Science degrees, CJ has also been certified as a Master Fitness Trainer Instructor by the US Army and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

    Whether you are an advanced climber looking to improve strength or just starting out, CJ can help you attain your goals with a periodized strength and conditioning plan tailored specifically to you.

    For the personal fitness coaching package with CJ, you get science-led training from a highly educated and experienced strength coach. You will get a one-on-one personal fitness coaching session for one hour in person with CJ once a week, plus a weekly training plan written by CJ specifically for you, depending on where you are in your training and your goals. During your initial session, CJ will assess your ability to do fundamental exercises and help you set some attainable and realistic goals. As your training progresses, CJ will continuously reassess your fitness and goals with you.

Cancelation policy: Cancelation must be made by email to info@flagstaffclimbing.com at least 7 days prior to the scheduled day to get full refund. If cancellation happens within 7 days, Flagstaff Climbing will refund all of the pre payment except for $50.
